چکیده

Thanks is due to Thomas Vetter, who kindly provided his implementation of the algorithm determining correspondence between the faces. We also thank Dieter Grass, Renate Nowotny and Michael Pollirer for valuable assistance in the pigeon laboratory. Abstract. Pigeons are known to be able to categorize a wide variety of visual stimulus classes. However, it remains unclear which are the characteristics of the perceptually relevant features employed to reach such good performance. Here, we investigate the relative contributions of texture and shape information to categorization decisions about complex natural classes. We trained three groups of pigeons to discriminate between sets of photorealistic frontal images of human faces according to sex and subsequently tested them on diierent stimulus sets. Only the pigeons that were presented with texture information were successful at the discrimination task. Pigeons seem to possess a sophisticated texture processing system but are less capable in discriminating shapes. The results are discussed in terms of the possible evolutionary advantages of utilizing texture as a very general and potent perceptual dimension in the birds' visual environment.

The Role of Shape and Texture Information in Sex Classiication

The sex of a face is perhaps its most salient feature. A principal components analysis (PCA) was applied separately to the three-dimensional structure and texture data from laser-scanned human heads. Individual components from both analyses captured information related to the sex of the face. Notably, single projection coeecients characterized complex structural diierences between three-dimensi...

Categories in the pigeon brain: A reverse engineering approach.

Pigeons are well known for their visual capabilities as well as their ability to categorize visual stimuli at both the basic and superordinate level. We adopt a reverse engineering approach to study categorization learning: Instead of training pigeons on predefined categories, we simply present stimuli and analyze neural output in search of categorical clustering on a solely neural level. We pr...

Face Recognition across Large Viewpoint

We describe a computational model of face recognition that makes use of the overlapping texture and shape information visible in diierent views of faces. The model operates on view dependent data from three-dimensional laser scans of human heads, which provided three-dimensional surface data as well as surface image detail in the form of a texture map. View-dependent information from these surf...

A separated linear shape and texture space for modeling two-dimensional images of human faces

Human faces di er in shape and texture. This paper describes a representation of grey-level images of human faces based on an automated separation of two-dimensional shape and texture. The separations were done using the point correspondence between the di erent images, which was established through algorithms known from optical ow computation. A linear description of the separated texture and ...
